Many of you wrote in and asked what happens if you have a mishap or indiscretion– what do you do when you’ve damaged your brand? Well, I got news- you CAN recover from a bad reputation- it’s just a lot easier if you didn’t have to. Today’s expansion article will give you the ins and outs from recovering from a bad rep.

No matter how hard you try to prevent it, there will come a time when you’ll find yourself faced with unfavorable situations- you’ve disappointed a member who just happens to sit on the board of your local chamber or maybe you responded personally on a public forum an angered a top client. Whatever the case may be- you’re beautiful brand has been tarnished now what?

Well first know that – it happens- but the Bible teaches that even a “righteous man falls seven times, and rises again. The good news is found in the second half of the verse “and rises again”. You can recover from failure but you must take practical steps to get back up.

Own your Part – Failing, falling, or forgetting are all forgivable offenses – Deception and cover up are NEVER an option! Your members, colleagues, and customers are likely to get over a mistake but not so much your denial. Practice being honest and upfront.

Fix it! – Whenever possible look for ways to correct the mistake (right your wrong) and do so sincerely and with joyful attitude. There’s nothing worse than an offender whose reluctantly remorseful. From an error in billing to a misprinted name in a program expressing sorrow is key to future success.

Build it! – Here’s where I see many leaders fall short. After a brand damaging experience rather than retreat look for ways to re-establish or build a positive reputation. Wallowing in your wrong is not an option. Get up and get back in the game! Just know that regaining trust and credibility requires careful and deliberate building of your brand. One by one began to create positive experiences for those you serve. It will take time but with consistency and persistency you can restore your broken brand.

Expanding your reach is not optional; it is your God-given responsibility. The ONLY way to expand consistently, effectively, and without compromise is to work with someone who knows, understands and can strategically guide you toward fulfilling your God-inspired vision.
