Have you ever told a really good joke only to find that no one laughed? Either the joke was NOT as good as you thought it was or you’re the only one got it (which likely means the joke was not good). The same thing can happen when it comes to sharing your ministry with others (or ministry marketing). If you are not careful, you may come across as sharing a really bad joke.

Communicating that which your ministry does to enhance the lives of those you are called to serve is simply matter of sharing your ministry’s EYR message. An EYR message is a message that when heard or read immediately compels the hearer to take the next step as it relates to engaging or interacting with your ministry. When done correctly, you’re EYR message automatically Expands Your Reach.

Crafting your ministry’s EYR message (or message to the masses) is a necessary, yet often misunderstood aspect of ministry marketing. Rather than telling others who you are and what you do, your EYR message should focus solely on those you are called to serve. Here are three vital things to remember when creating your message to the masses:

1.WIIFM – People LOVE to know “what’s in it for me“. Your “EYR” message should clearly communicate the benefits those that connect with you experience.

2. Short and Simple! – The easier it is to say, the more likely they will share. An effective “EYR” message is one that is easily remembered, reported, and repeated.

3. It’s ALL about THEM! – Remember, this message is all about reaching those you are called to serve; if it only resonates with you—it’s not an EYR message. Your “EYR” message should ALWAYS be communicated the language and style of those you are called to serve. Say it how they would say it.

Your Expansion in Action Assignment for the week:

Review your current “EYR” message. Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Does this message clearly communicate value we offer those we serve?
  2. Can this message be easily remembered, reported, and repeated?
  3. Is this message written in a manner similar to the way those I am called to serve hear and speak?
